O “filme de surf” é um dos mais fascinantes subgêneros do cinema, não só pela beleza e intensa movimentação de suas imagens, como também pela exposição muscular dos corpos sarados dos surfistas. O diretor e roteirista assumido Dan Castle aproveita a oportunidade e posiciona muito bem suas câmeras, com um olhar fetichista sobre o belo elenco masculino. O filme combina as estonteantes locações costeiras da cidade de Newcastle, na Austrália, com a energia pura, a música e a rebelião da cultura teen. O jovem Jesse, de 17 anos, mora com seus irmãos e vive à sombra do mais velho, Victor, que remói seu fracasso em se tornar o próximo grande astro do surf. O futuro de Victor não é promissor. Já Jesse tem o talento para ingressar no circuito internacional de surf e assim se afastar daquela realidade sufocante, mas será que ele também conseguirá superar sua vocação natural para se auto-sabotar? Durante um fim-de-semana com os irmãos e amigos, que incluirá a descoberta do primeiro amor e uma tragédia familiar, Jesse descobrirá o que realmente é importante na vida. O também ator Israel Cannan lidera uma banda que leva seu nome e que interpreta muitas das músicas da deliciosa trilha sonora.

'Newcastle' is a coming-of-age/family drama/surfing movie. 17-year old Jesse lives in the shadow of his older brother Victor's failure to become surfing's Next Big Thing. Even when he's in his natural habitat of magnificent surf breaks, his blue-collar future is brought home by the coal barges that constantly line his horizon. Jesse has the natural skills to surf his way out of this reality and onto the international circuit but can he overcome his equally natural ability to sabotage himself? A momentous weekend away with his mates that includes first love and tragedy leads him to discover what's really important, and also to the performance of a lifetime.
