     A diretora e roteirista Tanaz Eshaghian é de origem iraniana, mas se mudou aos seis anos para Nova York. Desde que se formou em cinema, ela se debruça sobre a realidade dos cidadãos iranianos em seu país ou como imigrantes geralmente discriminados nos Estados Unidos. Aqui, ela lança um olhar íntimo e provocador sobre a vida no Irã a partir de um grupo que vive à margem da sociedade: jovens iranianos que escolheram se submeter a uma operação de mudança de sexo. No Irã, essa intervenção cirúrgica é legal há cerca de vinte anos, desde os tempos do aiatolá Khomeini, mas apenas para “transexuais diagnosticados”. A homossexualidade, por sua vez, continua sendo punida com a morte. A cineasta acompanha vários jovens antes, durante e depois do processo de operação. O longa conquistou três prêmios no festival de Berlim 2008: o prêmio Teddy do júri (dedicado aos melhores filmes de temática LGBT), o prêmio dos leitores da tradicional revista gay alemã Siegessäule e uma menção especial da Anistia Internacional.

An intimate and unflinching look at life in Iran, seen through the lens of those living at its fringes, 'Be Like Others' is a provocative look at a generation of young Iranian men choosing to undergo sex change surgery.
